Understanding 'Hot' vs. 'Cold' Thyroid Nodules: What Your Scan Results Mean

When you get a nodule, you're concerned, particularly if the doctor reports it as a “hot” or “cold” nodule on your scan. These terms are frightening-sounding but are commonly used by doctors to refer to how a thyroid nodule appears on a nuclear medicine thyroid scan. A thyroid nodule refers to an abnormal area or a lump in the thyroid gland. Most thyroid nodules do not cause any significant health problems; however, some need additional testing. A scan of the thyroid is helpful to assess how much tracer the nodule is consuming, as well as how much it takes up or does not take up when compared to the rest of the thyroid tissue.
